I was struck by the reported £2.5m cost of adding 30 car-parking spaces at Penrith station, working out at £83,333 per space recently reported in Rail magazine.

On current charges and assuming every space is constantly occupied, it will take 19 years to recoup the cost. Obviously the funders, Virgin and Network Rail, are relying on those 30 spaces attracting additional train ticket revenue. But one cannot help wondering what £2.5m might have done to transform the cycling...
