Merseytravel has invited rolling stock manufacturers to come forward with proposals to replace the entire fleet of electric multiple units used on the Merseyrail electrics franchise. A final decision to purchase new stock will only be taken following the conclusion of a business case review. The existing Class 507/508 stock is leased until 2015 but the contract could be extended to March 2018. The PTE has not ruled out owning, rather than leasing, new rolling stock.
