The DfT has awarded Virgin a two-year-and-nine-months contract to continue running the West Coast Main Line franchise. The operator will convert 21 first-class carriages to standard class, and plans to launch new services between Shrewsbury and London (two a day) and Blackpool and London (one a day). It will pay the Government over £430m over the period. The franchise will expire in April 2017.
