Using bi-modal Intercity Express Programme (IEP) trains instead of electrifying the line from Cardiff to Swansea could prove a false economy, an academic has suggested.
It was reported last year that the DfT was considering altering the ratio of electric to bi-modal trains in the IEP order with Hitachi to ensure that the new trains could temporarily operate on diesel over sections of the Great Western Main Line where electrification has been delayed.
