Labour shadow transport secretary would shift funds to North, says Standard

Labour's shadow transport secretary Andy McDonald said at a fringe meeting at his party's conference that there must be a "re-balancing" of transport investment away from London, according to The Evening Standard.

The Standard reported that McDonald, a Middlesbrough MP, said that the regions had a "fair complaint" that they receive less money for transport than the capital and therefore the party would be "mindful" of ensuring that parts of England that had experienced "very profound" under-investment did not fall behind.

The Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, meanwhile, said "the British people back McDonald's plan to take the railways back into public ownership," and praised Labour councils "putting Labour values into action," such as Cardiff Bus Company "taking 100,000 passengers a day, publicly owned with a passenger panel to hold its directors to account".
