DfT: Public transport key to third Heathrow runway that "helps to cut carbon emissions"

The Government today claims that a third runway can be built at Heathrow in a way that "will help to further reduce carbon emissions".

The DfT said that the first full-length runway in South East England since the second World War would improve connectivity within the U.K with new routes to Newquay, Humberside, Prestwick, Durham Tees Valley, Liverpool and Belfast taking the number of domestic routes to 14. Measures to "modernise use of our air space," meanwhile, will ensure the project is deliverable within air quality limits, including plans to improve public transport links and for an ultra-low emissions zone for all airport vehicles.

There will be a consulation on a draft national policy statement which will be followed by a vote in Parliament and then a planning application. The decision responds to a recommendation of the Airports Commission in July 2015.
