Highway Code change for smart motorways

Highways England is consulting on changes to sections of the Highway Code concerning driving on motorways and high-speed roads.

The amendments include new advice for how drivers should behave if they break down on a smart motorway without a hard shoulder.

Drivers are advised to “get left” and, if in the left lane, to exit their vehicle by the side furthest from the traffic.
