Council concerns remain as longer lorries get DfT go-ahead

The Government has authorised the use of longer semi trailer lorries despite the original trials not having continued as first planned. Rhodri Clark looks at the implications for local authorities.

To some degree of surprise, the Department for Transport has decided to end the decade long trial of Longer Semi Trailer lorries and permit their roll out from 31 May, though local authorities remain concerned over the potential costs they may impose on their roads.

No additional funding is being made available, and the DfT admits that no estimate of the level of infrastructure impact was possible from the evidence available.
