Free parking will be capped at two hours at a pair of car parks run by Rushcliffe Borough Council in Nottinghamshire.
Fees will apply to the Newgate Street and Needham Street car park from October.
It is currently free to park for up to 12 hours -– the maximum stay – at Newgate Street. At the Needham Street site is free for two hours and £20 for 12 hours.
The authority said the changes will free up spaces and discourage all-day parking, which shoppers have welcomed.
