Green symbols based on an image of a car and a plug seem to be the most effective way to signal the availability of electric vehicle (EV) charging facilities. Signs using symbols based on the image of charging cabinet make drivers think of petrol pumos and lightning flashes have Fascist overtones!

These are among the findings of research undertaken for the Department for Transport on symbols to direct people to electric EV charging points.
