Joe Rukin, the founder of campaign group Stop HS2, implies that capacity is an afterthought in the debate over HS2, but he is wrong (Letters LTT 29 Jul). The capacity of the West Coast Main Line (WCML) and wider national rail network to meet growing demand is, and always has been, the fundamental argument for a new line.

This was made clear to the House of Commons transport select committee by evidence from Network Rail, which undertook a study into the case for new lines several years ago....
