Bristol clean air zone plan criticised for not going far enough to reduce car use

The exemption proposed for private cars, whilst commercial vehicles and buses would be required to pay to enter the city centre, was strongly criticised by a prominent environmental activist. Rik Thomas reports

“West country asthmatics breathed a deep sigh of relief last week, as Bristol City Council unveiled long-awaited plans for a clean air zone in the city,” said environmental activist Leo Murray in The Guardian on 4 November. “It cannot come too soon for Bristol’s most vulnerable residents: illegally poor air quality currently contributes to 333 annual premature deaths from respiratory illnesses in the city.
