Much of the north-west of England’s rail network could be electrified under plans announced this week by transport secretary Lord Adonis.
Adonis proposed the electrification of three lines:
Between Huyton and Wigan to allow electric trains to operate between Liverpool and Wigan via St Helens
Between Manchester and Euxton Junction just south of Preston to allow electric trains to operate between Manchester and Preston via Bolton
