The plans for high-speed rail have resulted in a cross-party transport euphoria. Indeed, councillors at the recent Birmingham Transport Summit were excited at the prospect of attracting business from the South East without considering the possibility of the exact opposite occurring.

However, not everyone is as happy as our sheep-like politicians. In my neck of the woods the planned route through parts of rural Staffordshire and Warwickshire is controversial to say the least. It’s ironic...
