Transport Secretary Philip Hammond has asked Network Rail to examine the case for replacing the third rail in southern England with alternative systems that are more resilient to severe winter weather.
Hammond was responding to a recommendation from David Quarmby in his independent audit of how the transport system coped with the early and severe winter weather last month.
