London Waterloo is the busiest station in the UK, data for 2009-10 published by the Office of Rail Regulation shows. During the year, 86.4 million passengers travelled to or from Waterloo – 15 million more people than used the second busiest station, London Victoria.
The only London terminal to record an increase in use during the year, when patronage was hit by the recession, was Euston. Passenger numbers rose 9% to 30 million as a result of the launch of the Virgin high frequency timetable in January 2009.
Outside London, Birmingham New Street remained the station handling most passengers – 25 million during the year. Among the 10 busiest stations outside London, Glasgow Queen Street, Edinburgh and Gatwick Airport all saw passenger numbers rise 10%.
