The Welsh Audit Office has urged the Welsh Assembly Government to improve the project management of local authority major transport schemes in order to prevent spiralling costs.
The recommendation follows the Audit Office’s review of 18 major road and rail projects completed between 2004 and 2010. It found that scheme costs rose by 61% – from £366m to £592m – between the initial preferred route announcement and final outturn expenditure.
