Electric cars are transport’s version of Betamax videotapes

I think transport minister Norman Baker is being badly advised on the future of electric vehicles (Letters LTT 12 Oct). The Toyota company has realised the dead-end that electric is for personal transport in the terms we use it now and, as the minister points out, history has some good examples of good ideas that are by-passed very quickly. Remember Rabbit phones, Betamax and Phillips video, CD & DVD being overtaken by Blue Ray, which in turn has been overtaken by internet streaming....
