THE DEPARTMENT for Transport has secured the future of Blackpool’s historic tramway with the confirmation by transport minister Tom Harris that it is to fund £60m towards an £85m project to upgrade the system.
Harris said that the upgrade, which could be completed in 2012, would bring the route between Starr Gate near the South Pier to Fleetwood up to 21st century standards and act as a catalyst for the regeneration of the town.
