A potential contradiction lies at the heart of current developments in heavily used urban public transport:  Capacity versus comfort.

To be popular, and play its part in the functioning of cities, most practitioners would agree that public transport in cities should be attracting motorists from their use of private cars, by providing a high quality alternative. To be cost effective however, particularly at peak times, each vehicle also needs to shift high volumes of people.
