Sydney’s Opal smartcard scheme ‘is world’s largest’

The Opal smartcard system for public transport currently being installed in Sydney by the Cubic-led Pearl consortium for regional agency Transport New South Wales (NSW), is being claimed as the world’s geographically largest to date, covering the whole of the 40,000km2 Greater Sydney area. Being trialled initially on harbour ferries, it will roll out on CityRail services during 2013-14 and, by end-2015, is due to be operational at more than 300 train stations and on 5,000 buses....
