Transport Scotland is to implement 20mph zones on trunk roads within five towns.
A consultation process will develop specific proposals for each of the locations: Biggar, Langholm, Largs, Maybole and Oban.
Transport Scotland said it expected the 20mph speed limit on the trunk roads would be largely self-enforcing with no need for traffic calming measures. Instead, the use of gateway treatments, signing and lining will reinforce the speed limit changes.
The measures could be implemented in the spring or summer.
Transport Scotland has rejected 20mph limits on trunk roads in a number of other towns: Keith, Nairn, Inveraray, Golspie, Callander, Springholm, Crocketford, Aberlur, and Cromdale. It said analysis suggested 20mph limits would be “ineffective or impractical”.
