The Spanish capital Madrid has started making drivers of cars that pollute pay more to park. The city hopes to reduce air pollution and congested levels by encouraging drivers of the worst offending vehicles to switch to public transport. 

Since 1 July, the price a motorist pays to park has been based on a scale related to the car’s engine type and the year of its manufacture. Electric cars park for free, hybrids pay 20% less to park, while diesel-engined cars built before 2001 face...
