Councils rush to apply for permit powers

A number of English highway authorities are requesting approval from the DfT this month for permit schemes to manage road works, ahead of rule changes next April. 

The Deregulation Bill will end the DfT’s role in approving permit schemes next April, with schemes instead being approved by a council’s own order. The  Secretary of State will retain powers to make regulations, including permit fee structures.
