Tramlink plays a growing part in keeping south London moving

With passenger numbers now above its original design capacity, a £30m upgrade to Tramlink in south London is underway. John W E Helm visited the system’s headquarters to find out more

Passenger journeys on Tramlink in south London have more than doubled from 15 million to 31.2 million since the system opened in the summer of 2000, and numbers are projected to reach over 37 million before the decade is out. Passenger miles increased from 59.7 million to 100.9 million between 2000 and 2014, and passenger revenue rose by over 43% in real terms during the same period.
