I don’t have many heroes, but I’d like to highlight two, who were almost contemporaries. Edward Carpenter (1844-1929) was an upper-class Englishman and radical socialist who wrote the workers’ anthem ‘England Arise’, which has a much better tune than ‘The Red Flag’.
