Countryside campaigners this week claimed the Government had abandoned plans to establish a National Roads Fund for England.
Chancellor George Osborne announced last summer that all vehicle excise duty (VED) in England would be ringfenced for the fund from 2020/21 (LTT 10 Jul 15). The funding is to be used exclusively for Highways England’s strategic road network (SRN) but in March the Treasury said it could also support local roads close to the SRN (LTT 18 Mar).
