DB Cargo UK, Britain’s largest rail freight operator, plans to cut 893 staff – about 30% of its workforce – in response to the collapse of coal traffic, and decline in markets such as steel.
DB said the UK rail freight market was facing “unprecedented challenges”. Coal-fired power stations are closing in response to the Government’s climate change policies and EU emission legislation.
