The Scottish transport minister is looking at how he could re-nationalise Scotland's railways in a model similar to that of CalMac Ferries, according to Scotland's Herald newspaper.

The Scottish Government's official line, given to the newspaper, is that it is laying the ground to make a public sector bid when the Scot Rail franchise, awarded to Abellio last year, is re-tendered. The Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said last week that if ScotRail does not meet its performance requirements, "we have the option of terminating their contract early".

The newspaper quoted a source as saying that the minister Humza Yousaf would prefer to move to public ownership as soon as possible and is examining how this could be done. Abellio ScotRail managing director Phil Verster has said it would “absolutely not” reach the point where the number of trains running late could force the Scottish Government to end Abellio’s contract, it added.

Yousaf is currently pressing to take control of the development and delivery of Network Rail projects, after saying he was frustrated by its performance.
