The DfT has used new appraisal methods to build the business case for a 1.8-mile long tunnel to hide the A303 trunk road in the vicinity of the Stonehenge World Heritage Site.
The tunnel is part of a larger plan to dual a seven-mile section of the road, which also includes a bypass to the north or south of the village of Winterbourne Stoke. The estimated outturn cost of the project is in the range £1.129bn-£1.802bn, with a most likely figure of £1.385bn.
