The number of trips made by people in England continued to fall last year and is now 13% lower than 2002, according to the National Travel Survey.
People made on average 774 trips in 2016, excluding short walks (defined as being less than a mile in length). In 2002 the average was 886.
Average distance travelled, excluding short walks, was 6,396 miles in 2016 – 10% below the 7,104 miles recorded in 2002. The 2016 figure was 3% lower than 2015.
