Work has begun on the redevelopment of Wigan Bus Station, which is being delivered by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM).

The first stage of the £15.7m project includes the demolition of the old bus station on Hallgate, which will pave the way for main contractor Vinci Construction to start initial ground works.

Once completed, the new bus station will offer travellers improved waiting areas for passengers, a ticket and information outlet and retail facilities.

During the construction phase, bus services will use bus stops that have been relocated to the town centre and a temporary travel shop has been opened on Hallgate.

The new bus station is expected to open by the end of 2018.

Guy Harkin, vice chairman of the TfGM Committee, said: “I’m delighted demolition work has begun, opening up the site for construction to start. I’m sure passers-by will be interested in seeing the new, modern facility begin to take shape. This is an exciting time for Wigan – a new bus station is a key part in delivering an improved transport system for the borough that is fit for the decades ahead.”

David Molyneux, Wigan Council’s cabinet member for regeneration, said: “Once the new bus station is complete, it will help support the economic growth of the borough and help people get to and from work and also enjoy the many great shops, restaurants and bars in the town.”

Funding for the Wigan Bus Station development is being supported by central government through the Greater Manchester Local Growth Deal Programme.
