Deptford street re-designed as extension of park

30 August 2017

A community-inspired street design in south London has been shortlisted in the Proposal of the Year category at the Healthy Street Awards.

The design set out to link Rolt Street in Deptford with Folkestone Gardens, the neighbouring park.

The project was commissioned by the London Borough of Lewisham and developed by walking and cycling charity Sustrans in partnership with park user group Deptford Folk and the local community.

Sustrans created a one-way boulevard, creating “seamless crossing” to improve safety, enabling people to walk, cycle, play and socialise.

Sustrans said it aimed to address a range of issues identified by local residents, including fast-moving traffic, poor visibility, park guard railings and lack of safe crossing points.

On a trial day, automatic traffic counts showed traffic speeds were reduced by 20mph as a result of temporary measures, says Sustrans. The anticipated cost of the project is £700,000 and the London Borough of Lewisham is looking to secure funding through developer contributions under Section 106 and the Community Infrastructure Levy.

Zoe Spiliopoulou, Head of Built Environment at Sustrans London, said: “This nomination is a fantastic boost of confidence to our community street design work. Our people-led approach means streets and spaces are designed by, and for, local community.

“With Folkestone Gardens being the centre of many of London’s transport links for both walkers and cyclists, it was important the design met the needs of local families and commuters alike whilst highlighting the historical significance of the area. We’re looking forward to delivering the proposal to help local community and future generations make healthier travel choices and enjoy life with less pollution and traffic.”

The Healthy Streets Awards will take place on 28 September at Waltham Forest Assembly Hall, London.
