Electric bikes are to feature in a bike hire scheme for Edinburgh being procured by the City of Edinburgh Council’s company, Transport for Edinburgh Ltd (TEL).
Bidders are being asked to supply a minimum of 500 manual and 100 electric bikes for the scheme, which should be operational from June this year. The electric bikes are being proposed because Edinburgh is a hilly city.
Bidders are free to propose dock-based or dockless schemes.
The scheme will initially cover the city centre and university areas but is expected to expand over time.
It must operate at nil cost to the council and the contractor must pay TEL £30,000 a year to cover scheme administration and management costs.
TELplans to award a contract for an initial three years with the option to extend for up to a further four.
Bidders must be accredited by Bikeplus and comply with TEL’s code of practice for bike share.
