Passenger numbers on franchised rail services fell last year for the first time since 2009/10, according to the Office of Rail and Road.
Estimated journeys in 2017/18 dropped 1.4 per cent to 1.708bn, following a slowing in the rate of growth over the previous three years. Last year’s fall has been driven by a 2.1 per cent reduction in journeys in the London and South East sector, which accounts for 68.7 per cent of all national passenger journeys.
