Each new diesel multiple unit train for Wales and Borders services will feature space for six bicycles, Transport for Wales has disclosed. A spokeswoman said: “To encourage cyclists to travel by train, we will launch a bike booking system during 2021.” From 2022, the new DMUs will replace units with only two bike spaces on routes serving major tourism areas, including three National Parks. Services from Swansea to Manchester via Cardiff and Shrewsbury will be formed of two units, with 12 bike spaces in total. The Scottish Government has responded to demand for more bike spaces on scenic routes by pledging to hire additional single car diesel units (Class 153) for bicycles and outdoor equipment by next summer. The units will be coupled to existing passenger-carrying trains.
