Banning diesel freight trains could worsen inter-urban road congestion and lead to thousands of extra lorry kilometres in London, according to a study for the National Infrastructure Commission.

The NIC has recommended completely decarbonising the road and rail freight sectors by 2050 to support the Government’s Climate Change Act targets (LTT 26 Apr). It is confident that batteries or hydrogen fuel cell technology will enable  road freight to decarbonise by this date but sees less...
