Rail passenger numbers hit 43-year high
Patronage on Britain's railways last year was higher than at any time since 1961, according to the new Rail Industry Monitor from TAS Publications.
Passenger numbers in 2003/04 rose by 1.7% to 1.001 billion. Meanwhile, passenger kilometres increased 3% to 40.9 billion - the highest figure since 1946.
The aggregate figures hide a wide variation between service types.
