A project to increase rail capacity through Ely is likely to cost more than £500m, according to the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority.
Ely lies at the junction of five railway lines. Those from Peterborough, Kings Lynn and Norwich come in from the north and lines to Cambridge and Bury St Edmunds/Ipswich head off to the south. As well as handling numerous passenger trains, Ely is on a route for container trains to/from the Port of Felixstowe.
