Automated driving plan for motorways

Automated driving could be permitted on Britain’s motorways as soon as next year.

The DfT this week issued a call for evidence on automatic lane keeping systems (ALKS) that allow car drivers to pass the task of driving to the vehicle.

An international regulation permitting the use of ALKS at up to 60km/h (37mph) was approved this summer. The DfT is interested in allowing ALKS at speeds of up to 70mph.
