Durham County Council is to give the new owners of the Weardale Heritage Railway a £2.1m grant to help repair the line, despite concerns about the venture’s prospects.
The Auckland Project, a regeneration charity based in Bishop Auckland, recently completed the purchase of the 19-mile railway between Bishop Auckland and Eastgate. The line’s US parent company Iowa Pacific Holdings went into receivership last October.
