The dft is consulting on plans to trial 48 tonne lorries – four tonnes heavier than the current maximum.
The consultation was launched this week alongside another on permitting universal use of longer-semi trailers (LSTs), two metres longer than conventional trailers.
The weight increase from 44 to 48 tonnes for six-axle vehicles would be trialled on about ten routes cleared by the owners of structures such as bridges.
