Local authorities have backed Network Rail’s plan to increase rail capacity in and around Ely in Cambridgeshire. 

Ely is the junction for five lines: those from Peterborough, Kings Lynn, and Norwich enter from the north, and those from Cambridge and Bury St Edmunds/Ipswich from the south. 

Network Rail had a project to increase capacity at Ely North Junction but this was put on hold in 2016 following the review of the enhancement programme by new chairman Sir Peter Hendy....
