The 1985 Transport Act deregulated bus services in England (outside Greater London), Scotland and Wales. This led to a period of intense competition between recently privatised subsidiaries of the National Bus Company, municipal bus companies and new entrants. However, over time the market has consolidated with just two companies (Stagecoach and FirstGroup) now running almost 50 per cent of the deregulated bus market.
