Network Rail challenges improvement notice

Network Rail has taken the unusual step of appealing against a regulatory improvement notice, which was issued as a result of the train crash in Salisbury last autumn. 

The accident was linked to leaf material on the rails preventing braking, but felling lineside trees to reduce leaf fall and the risk of trains hitting fallen trees or branches has often brought Network Rail into conflict with conservation bodies and local residents.
