Councillors in Liverpool have voted to scrap the role of elected mayor just ten years after it was introduced, with the ruling Labour Party deciding to return to a leader and cabinet model.  

This follows a public consultation in which 40.9% (4,709 votes) of respondents chose the option of a city mayor directly elected by voters every four years while 32.9% (3,793 votes) backed the option of the council led model.
