Local Authorities in England face a “completely unsustainable” annual bill of more than £450m to pay for concessionary fares for the elderly, disabled and other qualifying groups, according to a Local Government Association (LGA), analysis.
Ahead of its annual conference in Bournemouth this week it said that the system of funding was ‘unfit for purpose’ and called for the Government to finance the scheme in full.
