A £3bn rise in the estimated cost of completing phase 1 of HS2 between London and Birmingham has been challenged by the Government. HS2 Ltd, the company responsible for developing and promoting the high speed rail network, says the cost of phase 1 from Euston to Birmingham and works north to Fradley and the Handsacre Junction is between £49bn and £57bn.
