Government sets target to grow rail freight but at least 75%

The amount of goods transported by rail will increase by at least 75% by 2050, Transport Secretary Mark Harper has stated.

This will lead to significant environmental benefits by taking lorries off our roads, reducing emissions and congestion in the process, said Harper. He pointed out that one train can replace up to 129 heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) and a tonne of freight moved by rail produces about a quarter of the carbon emissions it does by road.
