Putting School Streets on the map... in the North and South

Landor LINKS is staging two School Streets conferences – one in London and the other in Bradford

11 January 2024

The case for School Streets is becoming ever compelling with more and more councils installing them. They are increasingly being seen as a way of effectively addressing the congestion, road safety and air quality concerns that many schools experience.

Not only do School Streets improve the quality of people’s lives locally – they make a difference for entire communities. But the success of a scheme depends on how consultation, implementation, enforcement and monitoring are carried out.

This will be discussed at two events, one staged in the North and the other in the South.

Landor LINKS is running the one-day conferences to showcase best practice and offer practical guidance. The events will bring together professionals from a range of disciplines.

  • School Streets South, run in partnership with Lambeth Council, takes place on 29 February at Lambeth Town Hall, Brixton.
  • School Streets North, in partnership with West Yorkshire Combined Authority, will take place on 15 March at Great Victoria Hotel, Bradford.

The headline sponsor for both events is Marston Holdings.

Monitoring of schemes has revealed how they are enabling children and families to safely walk, wheel, scoot or cycle to school. And by making active travel possible for everyone, they help contribute to efforts to tackle the health crisis and climate change.

A range of issues will be discussed including: funding; partnerships; active travel; health and wellbeing; consultation and engagement; infrastructure design; monitoring; traffic management and enforcement.

School Streets South

The opening speaker at the London event will be School Streets champion Rezina Chowdhury, Lambeth Council’s Cabinet Member for Sustainable Lambeth and Clean Air.

Panellists at School Streets South will include:

  • Stephanie Pathak, Strategy and Planning Manager, Transport for London
  • Samuel Dillon, School Streets Officer, Lambeth Council
  • Zahra Ali, Transport Projects Officer, Hounslow Council
  • Lucy Atkinson, Programme Manager, Urban Design and Engagement, Sustrans
  • Liz Brooker MBE, Road Safety and Sustainable Transport Manager, Lewisham Council.

Dr Anna Moore will offer two, inter-linked perspectives as a Respiratory Specialist Registrar at the Royal London Hospital and a member of campaign group Mums for Lungs.

There will also be a round table discussion and Q&A, led by Andrew Potter, Transport Planner and Modeller, Director at Parking Perspectives. This will give delegates the chance to  ask a panel of experts about operational and policy-related issues. This could cover issues around the need for national policy on exemptions and signage, challenging ‘culture war’ myths, working in partnership with neighbouring councils, and building partnerships with TfL and other organisations.

School Streets North

School Streets North will be opened by West Yorkshire Mayor Tracy Brabin.

Panellists will include:

  • Leanne Farrow, Team Leader, Leeds City Council
  • Becky James, Team Leader – Road Safety, Bradford Council
  • Susan Walker, Wakefield Council
  • Rosslyn Colderley, Director of Sustrans North.

Richard O’Malley, Strategic Account Director - North, Marston Holdings, will explain the challenges of managing and enforcing School Street schemes, while Asa Thomas, Research Fellow in Active Travel and Micromobility, University of Westminster will share the key findings of his PhD on School Streets.

Special guest speaker at School Streets North will be Ed Clancy OBE, Olympic cycling gold medallist and Active Travel Commissioner, South Yorkshire Combined Authority.

Other speakers will be announced soon.
